Attracting and Retaining Tech Employees
Free Net and Web Resources for Your Organization's IT Professionals by Darrol K. Harris IT Consultant   There's a tremendous amount of free information on the net and Web for IT professionals and for those who hire and manage them. Helping your organization's techies acquire the IT knowledge, experience and credentials they want in order to progress in their careers, can be a powerful means to keep them interested and engaged in the work your organization needs them to do. This can also help to avoid losing them to employers who would pay them more to hire them away. There are many useful free IT Web sites, grouped below in four categories: IT Informational Portals - These are IT supersites: Earthweb www.earthweb.com - IT industry portal. Provides content for research, your career, the IT community and commerce. TechRepublic www.techrepublic.com - IT community hub Made up of three sub-Web sites that provide content on training, user support, network administration, IT management, CIO analysis and enterprise resource planning. Solution Central www.solutioncentral.com - One-stop IT knowledge marketplace. Information on IT events, training, Web and technical resources. Brainbuzz www.brainbuzz.com - The mother of all tech sites Tech community for network engineers, developers, job seekers and certification/training. PlanetIT www.planetit.com - IT network Provides IT news and information, advice and forum. IT Freelancer's Marketplace These are sites that offer IT professionals ways to market their abilities -- so your organization can share a techie, or help a techie establish a practice or portfolio of assignments. They also offer offer project/hiring managers ways to find skilled techs for their projects: Skillsvillage www.skillsvillage.com - The emarketplace for the contingent workforce. Matches contractors with hiring managers. Ework Exchange www.ework.com - Online marketplace for project based work. Connects people and projects.
