Cutting through the Online Information Undergrowth by Michael Gilbert Nonprofit Online News   In order to publish Nonprofit Online News (http://www.gilbert.org/news), we filter and sort through nearly 1,000 Web pages and over 12,000 e-mail messages each week. We do all that to produce ten to 20 snippets of news related to nonprofit organizations. Our particular emphasis at Nonprofit Online News is on stories related to organizational development, nonprofit outreach, or Internet strategy. But what do you do if you’re interested in a different slice of the nonprofit news pie? Do you have to sort through thousands of messages by hand? There’s too much information online. What is a busy person to do? Three Choices 1) Ignore online news entirely. This is certainly a viable option, but there are several drawbacks: There’s an increasing amount of news that’s distributed only online. You’ll typically receive online news faster than the equivalent paper source. You can respond and act more quickly to online news. You can copy and forward online news more easily. 2) Spend a lot of time and effort sorting through a lot of sources. Only news professionals and news junkies have time for this. Because many nonprofit organizations are in the business of staying informed, you might end up with a staff person who spends a fair amount of time on this. In effect, that person becomes your organization's news filter. 3) Choose some larger news sources and let them do the sorting. Like choosing a paper publication, you’re choosing an editorial stance. Experiment with them and see who gives you the information you want. Decide whether you want to put up with advertising. Talk back and eventually become a small source of news yourself. Where Can You Start Looking for News Sources? General-interest news publications: Chronicle of Philanthropy (http://www.philanthropy.com) Nonprofit Online News (http://www.gilbert.org/news) Nonprofit Times (http://www.nptimes.com) Philanthropy Journal Online (http://www.pj.org) Lists of news sources: Open Directory Listing (http://www.dmoz.org/News/Online) Idealist Nonprofit News List (http://www.idealist.org/news.html) Issue-specific sources: Handsnet Human Service News (http://www.handsnet.org) Institute for Global Communication (http://www.igc.org) Join Together Online (http://www.jointogether.org) What Can You Expect from Online News? Typically you can receive online news in two forms: Either you subscribe by e-mail and it arrives regularly in your e-mail box, or you visit a Web page, which is regularly updated. For example, Nonprofit Online News offers a daily Web version and a weekly e-mail version. The publications are usually, but not all, provided free of charge. They might be supported through advertising or the charitable mission of the organization. Excerpts from Nonprofit Online News The online library of the Mental Health Statistics Improvement Program provides several good documents designed to improve planning and evaluation for social service programs. (http://www.mhsip.org/library.html) Direct mail has fallen behind the Internet as a promotional medium for business. Can it be long before the same thing happens to nonprofit fundraising? (http://www.internetnews.com/IAR/article/0,1087,12_144641,00.html) Nonprofit Online News is launching the Online Fundraising Mailing List. To subscribe, send an e-mail from the e-mail address to which you want your subscription sent, to autoshare@gilbert.org with the words "sub fundraising" (without the quotes) as the body of the message. Michael Gilbert may be reached by e-mail at news@gilbert.org.
