Stretch Your Technology Budget -- Take Advantage of Product Donations By Kelly Tillinghast Senior Manager, Communications Gifts In Kind International If your 501(c)(3) organization could benefit from technology donations, consider the programs of Gifts in Kind International, the world's leading charity in product philanthropy. Gifts in Kind receives product donations in large quantities and makes them available to nonprofits at low cost -- far less than the prices which charities would otherwise have to pay if they were to buy them. Charities also save the time and cost of seeking donations. In 1998, Gifts in Kind distributed about $300 million in software, office equipment and supplies, plus a wide range of other critically needed products to more than 50,000 charities in the USA and around the world. Charity recipients ranged from national organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, and United Way to community-based groups such as homeless shelters, after-school programs, and job training centers. Donated Technology Products Available Charities interested in receiving technology donations can access two programs through Gifts In Kind. Donations of latest-version software from Adobe, Microsoft, and Lotus are available. In addition, office supplies are also available on a first come, first served basis. Used but usable 486 personal computers are also available through Gifts In Kind's Recycle Technology program through generous donors including Citigroup, IBM, Merrill Lynch, Paine Webber and Prudential. The donated systems provide charities with needed tools for Internet access and multitasking functions. Gifts In Kind International also recently launched a Technology Planning & Support Program, which provides an online system to match nonprofit organizations needing technology assistance with volunteer high-tech professionals. New York City Nonprofits Can Save Registration Fee Gifts In Kind works with many "Coordinating Agency Partners," including Gifts in Kind programs at more than 240 local United Ways. United Way of New York City's program is called Gifts-in-Kind New York. Budget-conscious nonprofits in New York City, take note: If you register with Gifts-in-Kind New York, you will be sponsored by Gifts-in-Kind New York for Gifts In Kind International's registration fee, currently $125, and you won't have to pay it. (Nonprofits that register directly with Gifts In Kind International have to pay that registration fee themselves.) There is no registration fee for Gifts-in-Kind New York. Just as with Gifts In Kind International, there is a small administrative fee for computer equipment. In addition, computer donations received directly by Gifts-in-Kind New York are made available only to nonprofits registered with Gifts-in-Kind New York.
